Information about the Eastern Maine Community College rad tech program, registering in a technical degree program to develop job skills, and taking free practice tests online. Which college degrees will give you the best chances of finding a job after graduation? Some students select a major because it offers practical skills that are valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major because they enjoy the subject material. Concentration in a medical field entails a lot of study, but the rewards are impressive. Job satisfaction, high salary, and employment security are the main benefits of hospital employment. The most popular college major is business administration, split equally between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the large majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list.

To prepare for graduate school, students can enhance their regular schedule by adding online classes. Distance education reduces the need for high-priced, course textbooks, as many books are now available on Kindle, or as shareware. Online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript, if you so choose. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Advanced Placement exams are offered in a variety of subjects, offering college credit for classes that you have done well in. Test yourself with free practice exams, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. If you earn a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam, you may be able to receive advanced placement in college.

Online Courses - MOOCs

Eastern Maine Community College rad tech programThere are more than 6,500 accredited colleges and universities in the US, which collectively enroll over 15 million students, and confer two million bachelors degrees a year. Pursue your career interests, not just a high salary, and your overall job earnings will increase over time as you gain experience. If you focus your degree choice on salary alone, there's the risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular, four-year college, and you still might end up earning a lot of money as a highly-skilled, technical consultant. By taking some of your degree courses online, you may be able to graduate earlier, saving money on tuition, as well as entering the job market sooner. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your spare time to advance your present career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing cloud-based software and Google apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree earned on campus. Udemy online learning, a site which allows anyone to build (or take) online courses, is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Khan Academy now offers over 3,900 micro-lectures available via YouTube. Coursera, another online-learning software platform, has millions of enrolled students around the world. Through MIT Open Courseware online classes, educators can improve development of their curricula, making their instruction more effective.

US College Rankings:

The US News college rankings rely upon data which US News collects directly from colleges and universities, either from an annual survey, or from the school's website. Best known for their 'Forbes 400' list of the richest people in America, the Forbes rankings have been getting a lot of attention for their list of America's Best Colleges. New college rankings aim to reflect a greater emphasis on student satisfaction, as well as recognizing academics. For critics of the US News & World Report college rankings, the new Forbes College Ratings seem to be more balanced, and include high rankings for many smaller colleges.

Although the cost of tuition has risen for most 4-year colleges and universities, community college remains an affordable option for those looking to earn an associates degree. The average community college student graduates with only a few thousand dollars in debt, compared to bachelors degree graduates. Further, if you're planning on transferring to a four-year program, you can save money for the first two years of your education by studying at a local community college, but still receive your bachelors degree from a well-known, four-year university.

Medical Jobs and Nursing

In the field of medical care, the following occupations are ranked the fastest-growing job categories by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Physical therapists help people who have injuries or illnesses improve their range of movement and manage pain. Physical therapist assistants work under the direction of physical therapists in treating patients. Registered nurses (RN), and licensed vocational nurses (LVN), provide patient care and emotional support. Diagnostic medical sonographers use ultrasound imaging equipment that directs sound waves into a patient’s body, in a procedure commonly known as a sonogram, to diagnose medical conditions.

Research various nursing degree programs that meet your requirements to become a nurse. The CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) is the first step in becoming a nurse. Most CNA programs can be completed within a few months, allowing you to begin working. The next step in a typical nursing career after the CNA is to become an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or LVN ( Licensed Vocational Nurse). 1-year nursing certificate programs train students to pass the licensing test to become LPNs or LVNs. A 4-year BSN program allows students to study specialized areas of nursing, including pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health nursing. Students may also study allied health topics outside of nursing through elective courses. An RN has to cope with more responsibility, and must oversee the work of LPNs and CNAs under their supervision. Please check with your state board of nursing for practical details and exams that you must pass to become board certified.

The following medical jobs provide challenging career paths, as well as competitive starting salaries with advancement prospects. Continuing education is required to keep abreast of the advancements in your chosen field. Medical lab technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. Nuclear medicine technologists use scanners to create images of various areas of a patient’s body. They prepare radioactive drugs and administer them to patients undergoing the scans. If you can pass the rigorous training program, nursing jobs are increasingly available, due to the aging US population, as well as the proliferation of healthcare services.

Nursing & Medical Job Listings

Earning a CNA degree (Certified Nursing Assistant) is the first step towards becoming a fully-qualified nurse. Most CNA programs can be completed within a few months, allowing you to join the workforce quickly. The next step in a nursing career is to become a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or LVN ( Licensed Vocational Nurse). These are year-long programs, in which you'll work under an RN distributing meds, treating wounds, and providing basic patient care.

In order to become an RN (Registered Nurse), a bachelors degree in nursing is recommended. RN's command a greater salary, and are responsible for an enlarged scope of practice over LPNs and CNAs. Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
